This survey was conducted with selected respondents in Hai Hau, Vietnam by Research Centre for Gender, Family and Environment in Development (CGFED) and in Son La Province by Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD).

This survey provides valuable insights into the employment status of farmers in Vietnam, based on responses from 304 individuals.

The data reveals that a significant majority, 91% (278 respondents), identified as self-employed, while only 8% (23 respondents) reported being employed by others. Additionally, 1% (3 respondents) did not disclose their employment status.

This overwhelming trend towards self-employment reflects the nature of agriculture in Vietnam, where many farmers operate small, family-run farms. These self-employed farmers often engage in subsistence farming, producing crops for their own consumption and for local markets.

This mode of employment allows farmers to maintain autonomy over their agricultural practices, yet it also exposes them to challenges such as limited access to resources, technology, and markets. In the context of Vietnam’s agricultural landscape, the predominance of self-employment highlights the need for supportive policies that can enhance farmers' livelihoods, improve access to training and resources, and promote sustainable farming practices.

The data presented in this survey does not reflect nationwide statistics but rather findings specific to the locations where the study was conducted by CPAM partners. Results should be interpreted within the context of these particular areas and may not be representative of broader national trends.
